Examples of fad diets that are currently trending include the Atkins Diet, which cuts out carbohydrates in favor of simple proteins, and the Paleo Diet, which claims to be based on foods available to Paleolithic humans.
Not all fad diets are not inherently bad; they may have components that are fine but many times they are very extreme. However, she cautions that it’s not a good idea to cut out any one food group. It’s better to cut back on a food group or reduce portions in order to remain healthy. Diets are usually short term; it's better to adopt a healthy lifestyle that you can stick with long term.
Following a fad diet can compound health problems because weight may come back once the diet is complete, or you may lose key vitamins and nutrients. Fad diets are also problematic because they're in the media, and what applies one day often changes the next. So how do you know what's right? As we age the overall importance of nutrition is even more important.
