That’s what we’ll talk about today, and our special guest expert on fad diets, Dr. Matthew Sorell will shed light on common questions about fad diets.
Dr. Sorell: As a doctor, as a clinician, when people come to me, I don't see an illness. I see a mom wants to become a mom again.
Because when we feel bad, when we don't have the energy, it affects every aspect of our life. So when people can come and get help healing and help for the different things that are afflicting them, it allows them to get back to enjoying life the way that God has called them. So in regards to the fad diets that, you know, most people come in here in my room with, you know, some of them are your standard SAD diet.
Misinformation is literally taking three different macronutrients and removing them as here's the priority.
The Dangers in Fad Diets
And, you know, they get so transfixed a lot of times on the caloric amount to the court and value. And, you know, it has to come back to some re education of why do we eat? What are these macronutrients doing for us?
And when we look at it from a general term or general concept, we can sit there and say protein and fat are going to allow for our body to heal up. And fat is an important nutrient because every cell of our body is made up of a phospholipid bilayer. That fatty layer around there is what every tissue is made up of. So obviously, fats have an essential component in rebuilding and healing our body. The protein obviously is used to rebuild the skeletal protein, the smooth proteins that make up the viscera.
And then lastly, we have the carbohydrates, which are just purely energy. So, again, two of them are used for rebuilding. Two of them are used for energy. And obviously we can sit there and try to nuance a bunch of those things. But once we get out of the macro nutrient world, we look at the micro nutrient from those are vitamins and minerals. And in another case, the fibers that make up the either are insoluble or soluble fibers that come in with the food.
Annette: Are there diets that actually create more havoc than good in the microbiome?
Fad Diets Can Be Dangerous
Dr. Sorell: We can actually test people and we could tell people what they are eating based on the bacteria that they are proliferating. Diversity is what we want to go for when we are looking at trying to be healthy and the way these different critters are growing within us.
So I have to keep things relatively simple at first because I can become very overwhelmed. But the connection between the way the brain is working and its major output into our GI tract, where we're digesting food and assimilating food, it's a very important thing. So major output, a brain to make sure we're able to digest, assimilate so we can repair and heal our own brain is very important.
