The most important thing is to know your basic parameters including measurements such as weight, height, and body mass index, as well as your fitness goals and activity levels. You also need to have some knowledge about the amount of calories each food has. This knowledge comes with time and the more interested you become, the easier it gets and the more intuitive you will eat, but that comes with experience.
