Some bodies of water in some parts of Fort Myers, Florida look green. It’s blue-green algae that has bloomed and it's toxic. Warmer temperatures and high nutrient levels are what causes algae to bloom. The citing in Fort Myers has caused the Florida Department of Health to issue a health advisory. “When you have a big wind event, like a hurricane, it stirs up those nutrients and the detritus that's on the bottom of the lake suspends it into the water and that's food for algae,” said Chris Wittman, the Co-Founder Captains for Clean Water.
